My Super Gay Tattoo

So, I did it. I took the plunge. I got a tattoo!

And not just any tattoo, a super gay tattoo. Of course.

I had been thinking about getting a tattoo for a long time - and always had the idea that I wanted something LGBT related. All of the gay symbols seemed... well, quite... flashy. As they should be! But I don't think I want a rainbow triangle emblazoned on me for all the rest of time.

So I decided on a decidedly subtle symbol, the lambda, which was used by the gay rights movement of the 60s and 70s as a signal for its members. The lambda stands for Liberation, for unity, and for "light of knowledge shining into the darkness of ignorance."

I placed it on my right-hand wrist, cheated off to the side - so I can look down at it whenever I want.

I love it. It looks fantastic, and every time I look down at it I smile and feel connected to something bigger than myself. I think about the history of it, the struggle and the fighting and how far things have come. And how far they still have to go.

Needless to say my mom wasn't as thrilled about my rather abrupt decision. But she wasn't angry either. I think she realizes this was something I really have always wanted to do for myself. It's going to take some getting used to for the both of us! I can't believe it's there ... FOREVER. That baby ain't gonna wash off!

And I'm glad. It's beautiful.
