Stand up, Catwoman!

Waaaahhhhhhhh.... I can't believe I missed it! And I'm so close to leaving for Japan! Only two weeks away...

This weekend Osaka played host to one of the biggest lesbian club events in Japan, Diamond Cutter (why it's called that, I'm not really sure). Hundreds of lesbians come to play, hang out and meet up. Honestly, I have never seen this many Japanese lesbians in one place, let alone in Kansai. It's like Japanese Dina Shore, but one night only. Diamond Cutter comes to Osaka once or twice a year and is the main event on any Kansai lesbian's calendar. And I missed it! So sad...

Funny story about my first time at DC:

Diamond Cutter was actually the first even I ever attended in Japan - before I had any lesbian friends or anyone to go with. I met up with a Japanese girl on OutJapan.com who told me about the event, and offered to take me there with her.

I was blown away. First, by the sheer number of people. Second, by the strange nametag system.

You see, Diamond Cutter has a system by which other lesbians can see who they are compatible with just by looking at them.

I walked in the front entrance and was greeted by happy staff members who immediately asked me, "Tachi desu ka? Neko desu ka?"

"Um..... what?"

The staff could see the look of utter bewilderment on my face. Not only were they speaking in Japanese, but I had no context for what they were asking. In my beginner's brain "tachi" meant "stand up" and "neko" meant "cat." I had no idea what was being asked of me... All I could think of was: "Please stand up? Are you a cat?"

After some time, the staff simply took my nametag (which was printed with a number, a star and a heart), highlighted the top and bottom (both tachi and neko) and filled in the heart and star with pink highlighter. Then they told me to put the nametag on and enter. I was starting to get worried. I had no idea what kind of information was pinned to my chest.

Thankfully, a few hours into the event I met another American on the dancefloor, Judy, who explained what just happened.

Judy : "They want to know if you're a top or a bottom. You know, a butch or a femme."

Me: "Wait, what?! Isn't that kind of personal? Why do I have to have my sexual position pinned to my chest?"

Judy: "That's just how they do things here. If you're a tachi, you're probably not going to go out with another tachi. So these are things you need to know before getting into a relationship."

Me: "But what does it mean if I have both of them marked?"

Judy: "Reversible, baby! You go both ways!"

Quite the first experience, eh? Needless to say, I learned many things that night.

If you're in Tokyo there is a DC Halloween party on October 1st, check out the website for more details.
Until later, keep it real my gay ladies!

  1. "Stand up, you cat." Ha, ha, ha, I love this story.
Tachi and neko are very common terms among Japanese queers, but, yes, these are actually the sex positions.... It never occured to me.
    Makes me blush....
I love your site. Good luck for your job.
